Louth County Council Launches Public Consultation on Urban Speed Limit Review

Louth County Council has initiated a public consultation as part of its 2026 Speed Limit Review, focusing on all public roads within towns, villages, and settlements where the current speed limit is 80km/h or lower.

This review has been carried out in accordance with the Department of Transport’s 2015 Guidelines and subsequent amendments. As a result, several changes to urban speed limits have been proposed, including the introduction of new 30km/h zones in various areas.

These changes aim to enhance road safety and improve the overall environment for residents and road users. Research published by the RSA shows that pedestrians struck by a vehicle travelling at 80km/h have a 90% chance of being killed. That is reduced to 5% if a vehicle is travelling at 30km/h.

To support public engagement, a Statutory Consultation will run from Tuesday, 16 June to Thursday, 16 July 2026. During this period, the draft proposals will be available for public inspection during office hours and can also be viewed online on the Louth County Council website or Consultation Portal.

Members of the public are invited to attend a series of drop-in events being held across the county. The first event will take place on Wednesday, 24 June at the Ardee Civic Offices from 4pm to 7pm. The second event will be held on Thursday, 25 June at the Drogheda Civic Offices, also from 4pm to 7pm. The final drop-in event will take place on Friday, 26 June at County Hall in Dundalk, from 4pm to 7pm.

Submissions on the draft proposals can be made electronically on the Louth County Council Consultation Portal at consult.louthcoco.ie or in writing, marked ‘Submission – Louth Speed Limit Review 2026’, and sent to the Operations Section, Louth County Council, County Hall, Millennium Centre, Dundalk, Co. Louth, A91 KFW. All submissions must be received by 5pm on Thursday, 16 July 2026.
