Louth County Council prepared an urban regeneration vision for Westgate, Drogheda.  The Westgate Vision is a guide for townscape recovery within a 10 year plus delivery timeframe. The Westgate Vision (WGV) Area comprises: the Barlow House area, between George’s Square and Scholes Lane including Narrow West Street and extending north to Fair Street; the Old Abbey Lane area, between Narrow West Street and the River Boyne extending east to Dominic Street; and west to the Bridge of Peace and the Donaghy’s Mills Area west of the Bridge of Peace and south of Trinity Street.

Louth County Council subsequently applied for funding under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) which was approved in late 2019 to support Stage 1 of the West Gate Vision document i.e. “Short Term Delivery of the Vision - including technical assistance to progress feasibility, detail design and development consent” for public realm to include the following projects:

  • George's Square Gateway
  • Street Improvement
  • Lane way Improvement

In 2020, Turley Architects were appointed to carry out a feasibility and preliminary design of the public realm within this area and to get planning permission for these works. This work is nearing completion.

The overall objective of the Westgate vison project is to be a catalyst for positive regeneration in the Westgate area and the broader town centre.  This project aims to recover the streetscape and provide a new transformative gateway in the West End of Drogheda.

The key themes of the project are, creating enhanced public spaces, pedestrian linkages and public realm; ensuring inclusivity for all, improving connectivity and legibility for the community and for visitors/tourists to the town, capitalising and respecting the rich heritage of the town centre location and employing sustainable development principles throughout.
