Louth CoCo mark 30th anniversary of Dundalk Library at Roden Place

Louth County Council is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Dundalk Library at Roden Place.

Dundalk Library was the first local authority public library in Ireland, opening in 1858.  The library subsequently expanded and moved to the former Grammer School in Chapel Street.  In 1934 the Louth County Library service was established (under the LocalGovernment Act of 1925) and the Dundalk Free Library became the centre of the county wide service.

In March 1994, after more than 90 years in Chapel Street, the County Library headquarters moved into the newly renovated Distillery Buildings in Roden Place. 

To mark the milestone in Roden Place, Dundalk Library are delighted to host a panel discussion in the library at 6pm on Thursday 11th April. 

Over the past 30 years Irish society has seen many changes in terms of population growth and advancements in technology, leading to a more vibrant and culturally diverse society.  Louth Library Service has embraced these changes with Dundalk Library expanding and adapting the wonderful building in Roden Place to suit the growing needs of the community. 

Dundalk Library offers a varied, relevant physical stock, Local Studies resources, a suite of e-Services including e-books, e-audio books, language learning opportunities and much more.  Louth Library Service continues to upgrade the technology on offer with new PC’s and printing devices installed, an enhanced WiFi solution, interactive whiteboards, I-Macs and gaming equipment.  The introduction of a sensory space and equipment has enhanced Dundalk Library as a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.   

Dundalk Library will continue to strengthen and support communities by providing dynamic, inclusive, and responsive library services over the next 30 years and beyond.

Acting County Librarian Amanda Branigan explained: ‘The panel will consist of current and former library staff, along with long standing library borrowers.  We are looking forward to an evening of stories and reminiscences of events and characters that have contributed to the rich and varied history of the library, with lots of laughs and memories along the way.’
