Welcome to the Road Safety section of Louth County Council's website. In this section there is information on road safety issues as well as useful links to other websites containing information on road safety.
Road Safety Officer
The main role of the Road Safety Officer is to raise awareness and educate the public on road safety matters. Contact the Road Safety Officer at:
RoadSafetyOfficer@louthcoco.ie or at #LouthRoadSafety on Twitter.
View driving test pass rates, penalty point statistics, statistics on road deaths and injuries and more by clicking HERE.
Rules of the Road
The Rules of the Road is published by the Road Safety Authority and printed copies are available through all good bookshops.
You can also view and download them for free by clicking HERE
Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians all have a part to play in making our roads safer. We can all help to make Louth's road safer by treating each other courteously, obeying the rules of the road and by remaining alert at all times while using the road.
Road Safety Educational Resources
There are now a full set of resources approved at a national level for delivery in preschool, primary and post-primary schools as well as approved programmes for use in third level, workplace and in community settings. Further information can be found HERE.
County Louth Road Safety Plan
Road Safety Together Working Groups were established in every county as per action No 94 of the National Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 and are complementary to the national road safety strategy. The County Louth group has produced the County’s second Road Safety Action Plan by co-ordinating a multi-agency road safety policy and implementation at a local level.
The Co Louth Road Safety Plan covering the period 2023 to 2024 offers strategic direction for road safety in the County. The document outlines the actions to be undertaken in the County to improve the safety of our roads. A copy of the plan is available Road Safety Plan 2023-2024.pdf (size 4.6 MB)

Park 'n' Stride

Park 'n' Stride is an initiative promoted by Louth County Council in partnership with local business and schools in Dundalk, allowing parents who drive their children to school to park free of charge for a limited time in designated car parks, whilst walking the remainder of the journey to or from school. More information and how to apply is available HERE.
RSA 'Check it Fits' Service
RSA experts will check child car seats and restraints free of charge at various locations across Ireland. They will fix any incorrectly fitted seats and restraints, show parents how to do it themselves and answer any queries they have. It only takes a few minutes, no appointment is necessary and it is open to all makes and models of cars and child car seats. To see when 'Check it Fits' is next visiting Co Louth click HERE.
Give the 'Gift of a Lift' this Christmas
The idea of the initiative is that you commit to give a family member or friend one lift home or organise a taxi for them over the festive season using the specially designed Christmas card. It's a novel way of getting across a serious message as road users need to be extra careful at this time of year when roads are at their busiest, conditions can be dangerous and taxis can be hard to find. Copies of the card available in Co Louth libraries or can be downloaded HERE
Junior Road Safety Officer
The Junior Road Safety Officer scheme is an effective and popular way to get serious road safety messages across to children and provides an opportunity to develop their communication skills. Fifth and Six Class pupils have the opportunity to deliver important road safety messages to the entire school community in a fun and innovative way.
If your school would like to take part in this scheme or you want to find out more, please email roadsafetyofficer@louthcoco.ie
The activity pack to help them get started is available HERE and the Teachers Handbook is available HERE
Road Safety Art Competition
The theme of this year's Art Competition was 'Safe Cycling in Co Louth'. The closing date for entries has now passed.
