Burning of Waste

The burning of waste is strictly prohibited under the Waste Management Act (Prohibition of Waste by Burning) Regulations 2009 and is not permitted under any circumstances.

 

Civic Amenity Centres

V&W operate two civic amenity sites in Co. Louth, please contact the sites directly for queries in relation to waste acceptance, opening hours and charges.

The civic amenity sites do not accept commercial waste.

Unauthorised ‘Man in a Van’ Collectors

Beware of unauthorised/man in a van waste carriers advertising on social media who do not hold a waste collection permit. Waste is often illegally dumped and can result in you being prosecuted for unauthorised disposal of waste. As stated above the responsibility lies with the original waste producer to management their waste correctly.

In order to collect waste, the collector must hold a valid waste collection permit.

 

Authorised Household Waste Collectors

All authorised waste collectors must hold a valid waste collection permit issued by the National Waste Collection Permit Office (NWCPO). A full list of all authorised waste collectors is available on the NWCPO website http://www.nwcpo.ie/permitsearch.aspx

Product End of life - Compliance Schemes

Please be aware that there are a few compliance schemes/take back schemes operating nationally. These include:

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) - https://www.weeeireland.ie/, https://erp-recycling.org/ie/

All electrical retailers and wholesalers are legally obliged to accept WEEE back free of charge if a customer is making a similar purchase.

Customers can bring WEEE to a number of electrical stores who offer a free, no purchase necessary, take-back service for household-like WEEE, householders can also recycle ‘household-like’ WEEE at Civic Amenity Sites (recycling centres) nationwide.

 

Batteries – battery retailers are legally obliged to provide a free of charge take back option for customers.

 

Tyres – www.circolelt.ie  

When purchasing a new tyre we pay an Environmental Management Cost (EMC) for the ultimate disposal of that tyre. You should only use retailers register with Circol ELT.

 

Packaging – www.repak.ie .

Obligated retailers are required to either provide take back facilities for packaging or alternatively register with Repak who provide recycling facilities nationwide such as bring banks.

 

End of life vehicles  – https://www.elves.ie/en  

End of life vehicles must be taken to an authorised treatment facility (authorised by the Local authority) who will then in turn provide a Certificate of Destruction for the vehicle.
