Cumann na mBan

Cumann na mBan was publicly launched in Dundalk on 8 February 1916, with Angela Matthews as President. Curiously while local media in Drogheda and Dundalk reported on their activities, Louth RIC intelligence briefings did not mention them until mid-1921. However, the organisation was of more than passing interest to the authorities, and twice in August 1919 the homes of members in Dundalk, including that of Angela Matthews, were raided by the RIC. Their activities included intelligence gathering, despatch carrying, arms deliveries, providing sanctuary and first-aid skills for ‘on-the-runs’, support for prisoners and their families, political and propaganda work. By July 1921, estimates of the organisation’s strength in Louth vary from 6 branches (RIC) to 21(recent research). Despite the crucial role they played in the revolution, of the 30 military pension applications made by Co Louth members from Co Louth released to date by the Military Archives, only five were successful.
