Louth County Council invites people to discover the benefits of free library membership on National Public Libraries Open Day
Louth County Council is encouraging people of all ages to visit their local library on National Public Libraries Open Day, taking place on Saturday, 26 September 2026, and discover the many benefits of FREE library membership.
National Public Libraries Open Day is a nationwide celebration of Ireland's public library service. The annual event highlights the wide range of services, programmes and resources available through the country's 330 public libraries and encourages more people to explore what their local library has to offer.
To mark the Open Day, the library service will host a diverse programme of free events for all ages. From family storytimes in Carlingford and Dunleer, to a pop-up book club in Dundalk, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The day will also feature special Lit Lú festival events in Ardee and Drogheda, while Sustainable Development Goals Week activities will encourage creativity through eco-friendly and sustainable craft workshops for children.
With branches in Ardee, Dunleer, Dundalk, Drogheda and Carlingford and almost 18,000 members, Louth's libraries continue to be a haven for readers of all ages. However, today's libraries offer much more than books. Members can access audiobooks, eBooks, computers, printing services, newspapers and magazines, online learning resources, family programmes, cultural events, community activities and welcoming spaces to read, learn and connect.
Encouraging people to get involved in National Public Libraries Open Day, Cllr Dolores Minogue, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, said:
"Libraries are among the most valued public services in our communities and make a real difference to people's everyday lives.
“Across Louth, our libraries provide free access to books, technology, information, learning opportunities and community activities for people of all ages. They are places where children discover a love of reading, students can study, families can spend time together and people can connect with their community.
“On National Public Libraries Open Day, our libraries will host a range of events and activities that will give people an opportunity to explore their local library, meet staff, learn about the services available and see first-hand everything a free library membership has to offer.
“I encourage everyone to call in on 26 September and discover how their local library can benefit them and their family."

Through our outreach programmes, Schools Library Service and community partnerships, we continue to bring library services to people across the county while supporting literacy, lifelong learning and social inclusion.
