Proposed Temporary Closure of Section of Carlingford Lough Greenway

Louth County Council has announced its intention to temporarily close a section of the Carlingford Lough Greenway to pedestrians and cyclists from 1 September 2026 until 28 February 2027 to facilitate significant construction works associated with the Narrow Water Bridge project.

The proposed closure will affect the section of the Greenway between Lower Shore Road (L7051) and Victoria Lock, in the vicinity of the Narrow Water Bridge construction site. The temporary measures are required to ensure public safety while major works are being carried out.

Alternative routes will be clearly signposted, with Greenway users diverted via the Fathom Line, Newry Road (R179) and the L7051. Local and emergency access will be maintained throughout the works.

Members of the public who wish to object to the proposed closure can make a submission through Louth County Council's Online Consultation Portal.

Alternatively, objections may be submitted in writing, clearly marked "Road Closure Objection". All submissions must be received no later than 12pm on Wednesday, 12 August 2026.

Narrow Water Bridge Progress

The temporary closure will facilitate a significant phase of construction on the Narrow Water Bridge project, a landmark cross-border infrastructure scheme linking County Louth and County Down.

A number of key project milestones have been successfully achieved. The temporary marine piling works required for the skid beam system have been completed, while installation of the bracing system for the skid track has recently been finalised. These works form an important part of the infrastructure required to facilitate the safe delivery and installation of the bridge superstructure.

In parallel, significant progress continues to be made off-site, with fabrication of the bridge components at an advanced stage. The project is now moving from the foundations and enabling works phase into the highly visible bridge erection phase, which will see the structure begin to take shape over Carlingford Lough.

Once completed, Narrow Water Bridge will provide a new connection between Omeath and Warrenpoint, enhancing sustainable travel, supporting tourism and strengthening links between communities on both sides of Carlingford Lough.
