Part 8 Consultation: Proposed Drogheda Active Travel Scheme

Louth County Council is inviting members of the public to view and comment on the Draft Part 8 proposals for a major Active Travel scheme in Drogheda that will connect the Bridge of Peace and MacBride Railway Station, while also providing improvements along Marsh Road.

The proposed scheme forms part of the Council’s wider Active Travel programme and is one of six major Active Travel projects currently being developed in Drogheda. The project has already received National Transport Authority (NTA) Phase 3 approval and is now progressing to Phase 4, the statutory planning process known as a Part 8.

Improving connections across Drogheda

The proposed route will create enhanced walking and cycling facilities between key destinations, transport hubs and local communities. The scheme is designed to connect existing and future Active Travel infrastructure, helping to support more sustainable travel choices across the town.

The project aims to provide accessible infrastructure that aligns with the five principles of a cycle-friendly network as outlined in the Cycle Design Manual 2023: safety, coherence, directness, comfort and attractiveness.

Proposed works

The draft proposals include:

  • Approximately 1.6km of segregated cycle lanes and footpaths along the R132 corridor, including Rathmullan Road, George’s Street, John Street and Dublin Road
  • Approximately 0.8km of segregated cycle lanes and footpaths along Marsh Road (R150)
  • Upgrades to eight key junctions, including Rathmullan Road, Donore Road, The Bull Ring and Mary Street, to improve movement for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users
  • Improved surface quality and additional space for people walking and cycling
  • Enhanced links between two of Drogheda’s key transport hubs
  • Infrastructure designed to provide safer and more direct routes between residential areas, schools, employment centres and transport services

Safer and more sustainable travel

The scheme has several key objectives, including:

  • Improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists by reducing the number of road collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists
  • Encouraging greater use of walking and cycling for everyday journeys
  • Creating more attractive and accessible routes for people of all ages and abilities
  • Supporting a reduction in private car dependency and associated transport emissions
  • Increasing the number of walking and cycling trips across the project area by 20% within five years of completion

By providing dedicated, segregated facilities, the scheme aims to make Active Travel a safer and more appealing option for more people travelling around Drogheda.

Submissions

Plans and particulars will be available for public inspection from 21 July 2026 to 18 August 2026.

The closing date for submissions is 5pm on Tuesday, 1 September 2026.
