Bhí tionchar mór ag Cogadh na Saoirse - tréimhse an Chogaidh Cathartha (1919-23) ar Cho. Lú, áit inar maraíodh os cionn seachtó duine agus tráth ar lean an damáiste ollmhór do mhaoin agus do bhonneagar ar aghaidh. Tá spéis mhór ag an bpobal i gcónaí sa tréimhse seo agus is iomaí duine a chuireann tuairisc fúithi chuig Cartlanna Chontae Lú agus go háirithe teitheadh Frank Aiken “Hole in the Wall” (Poll sa Bhalla) agus os cionn céad fear as Príosún Dhún Dealgan an 27 Iúil 1922.

Dundalk Jail, a part of which now houses Louth County Archives, played a significant role in the revolutionary period in Co. Louth. From the Easter Rising to the War of Independence and the Civil War, it held political prisoners, was the scene of hunger strikes, several escapes and three executions.

The War of Independence – Civil War period (1919-23) had a profound impact on County Louth: over seventy people killed and immense damage to property and infrastructure sustained. This period continues to be of great public interest and the source of many enquiries to Louth County Archives and particularly the “Hole in the Wall” escape by Frank Aiken and over one hundred men from Dundalk Jail on 27 July 1922.
Louth County Archives and the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society have collaborated on this short film and accompanying booklet to produce a brief but authoritative account of the events that led up to that escape.
