Louth County Council Signs Contract for Westgate Vision Project

16th March 2021: Louth County Council has signed a significant contract with Turley, the multi-disciplinary specialist consultancy service, to develop a Masterplan for public realm works identified in the Westgate Vision Project. The Westgate Vision Project is a regeneration project launched by Louth County Council in 2018 to provide a vision for Westgate as the gateway to Drogheda’s historic town and the Boyne Valley heritage sites.

Turley was awarded the contract following a competitive tendering process. The company has been appointed to prepare a Masterplan for the area to recover the streetscape, transform Westgate and establish a positive regeneration dynamic in the broader town centre.

The Westgate Vision Project is funded under the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF).  Furthermore, the project will form the basis of future applications for funding under the scheme.

Joan Martin, Chief Executive of Louth County Council, said: “Louth County Council is proud to announce this positive next step in the Westgate Vision Project, which will enable us to look towards the further development of Westgate and the surrounding area. This regeneration project will allow the area to realise its full potential as a gateway to some of the county’s most significant and historic sites and attractions.

Seamus Donohoe, Project Coordinator from Turley said: “A real opportunity exists to provide a world-class public realm scheme for Westgate, instigating a catalysing impact for positive regeneration of the area and creating a social and sustainable environment in the centre of Drogheda.”

Funding under the  URDF aims to support more compact and sustainable development, as set out in Project Ireland 2040, through the regeneration and rejuvenation of Ireland’s cities and large towns, in line with the objectives of the National Planning Framework (NPF) and National Development Plan (NDP). It will enable a greater proportion of residential and mixed-use development to be delivered within the existing built-up footprints of cities and towns. This will ensure that more parts of urban areas can become attractive and vibrant places in which people choose to live, work, invest and to visit.

Turley is a multi-disciplinary specialist consultancy service operating throughout Ireland and the UK. It has a team of experts that offer an integrated planning and design service to both public sector and private sector clients. Previous experience includes the Titanic Quarter in Belfast; Fort George, Derry; and the Carlingford Lough Cross Border Greenway.

Conradh le haghaidh Thionscadal Fhís an Gheata Thiar Sínithe ag Comhairle Contae Lú

16 Márta 2021: Shínigh Comhairle Contae Lú conradh suntasach le Turley, an tseirbhís sainchomhairleoireachta ildisciplíneach, d’fhonn Máistirphlean a fhorbairt le haghaidh oibreacha réimse phoiblí i dTionscadal Fhís an Gheata Thiar. Is tionscadal athnuachana é Tionscadal Fhís an Gheata Thiar arna sheoladh ag Comhairle Contae Lú in 2018 chun fís a sholáthar don Gheata Thiar mar gheata chuig baile stairiúil Dhroichead Átha agus chuig láithreáin oidhreachta Ghleann na Bóinne.

Dámhadh an conradh do Turley tar éis próiseas tairisceana iomaíche. Ceapadh an chuideachta chun Máistirphlean a ullmhú don cheantar d’fhonn an sráid-dreach a athshlánú, an Geata Thiar a bhunathrú agus dinimic athnuachana dhearfach a bhunú i lár níos leithne an bhaile.

Tá Tionscadal Fhís an Gheata Thiar maoinithe faoi Chiste Athnuachana agus Forbartha Uirbí (CAFU) de chuid na Roinne Tithíochta, Rialtais Áitiúil & Oidhreachta.  Ina theannta sin, beidh an tionscadal ina bhunús le haghaidh iarratas amach anseo ar mhaoiniú faoin scéim.

Dúirt Joan Martin, Príomhfheidhmeannach, Comhairle Contae Lú:“Is cúis bróid í do Chomhairle Contae Lú an chéim dhearfach eile seo a fhógairt i dTionscadal Fhís an Gheata Thiar, lena gcuirfear ar ár gcumas féachaint ar aghaidh ar fhorbairt bhreise an Gheata Thiar agus an cheantair thart air. Tríd an tionscadal athnuachana seo ligfear don cheantar barr a chumais a bhaint amach mar gheata chuig roinnt de na láithreáin agus de na tarraingtí is suntasaí agus is stairiúla sa tír.”

Dúirt Seamus Donohue, Comhordaitheoir Tionscadail le Turley:“Tá fíordheis ann chun scéim réimse phoiblí den chéad scoth a sholáthar don Gheata Thiar, chun tionchar catalaithe a thionscnamh maidir le hathnuachan dearfach an cheantair agus chun timpeallacht shóisialta agus inbhuanaithe a chruthú i lár Dhroichead Átha.”

Is é an aidhm leis an maoiniú faoin CAFU tacú le forbairt níos dlúithe agus níos inbhuanaithe, de réir mar atá leagtha amach i dTionscadal Éireann 2040, trí chathracha agus trí bhailte móra na hÉireann a athnuachan agus a athbheochan, ar aon dul le cuspóirí an Chreat Náisiúnta Pleanála (CNP) agus an Phlean Forbartha Náisiúnta (PFN). Tríd an maoiniú beifear in ann cion níos mó d’fhorbairt áiteanna cónaithe agus ilchineálach a sheachadadh laistigh de loirg chomhthógtha na gcathracha agus na mbailte móra. Cinnteofar leis sin gur féidir codanna níos mó de limistéir uirbeacha a dhéanamh ina n-áiteanna tarraingteacha agus bríomhara ina roghnaíonn daoine chun cónaí agus obair a dhéanamh iontu, chun infheistiú a dhéanamh iontu agus chun cuairt a thabhairt orthu.
