This cross border project has been developed through a signed Memorandum of Understanding and will be implemented on a joint basis between Louth County Council and Newry, Mourne & Down District Council.  Cross border and cross community co-operation are at the core of the project as evidenced by the planned progression of activities and support for the project.

The Greenway project is part financed by the European Union's INTERREG VA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body. The new INTERREG Programme for 2014-2020 is one of 60 programmes across the European Union designed to promote greater levels of cross-border co-operation. Northern Ireland, the Border Region of Ireland and Western Scotland share a number of common features with other border areas across Europe where developmental problems are exacerbated by the existence of borders.
