Pride of Place 2017 - Dunleer

Dunleer6Dunleer7Dunleer4Dunleer-7Dunleer-6Dunleer-9Dunleer-10-Dunleer-2-Dunleer-14-‘Louth and Proud’ was the motto all the way when the ‘Pride of Place’ judges came to visit on 15th August 2017.

The competition, organised by Co-operation Ireland, and sponsored by IPB Insurance, serves to recognise and acknowledge exceptional community spirit around the island of Ireland. Nowhere was this community spirit more evident, than in the four centres nominated by Louth County Council for these awards this year.

Dunleer was the place to be later that day, where the judges were greeted with the warm sense of hospitality for which Dunleer is famous. A welcoming party of girl guides, community volunteers, elected members and officials greeted the judges on their arrival at the Market House, which was to set the tone for a very warm and welcoming visit to the town. The whole community came out in force to show the very best of what this town has to offer. From the Mens’ Shed, to the Historical Society, the Active Retirement Group, the Dunleer Community Hub, Lannleire GFC, Team Carrie, Dunleer AC, D2K, the White River Wheelers, Scoraicht Lannleire and Scoil Ui Mhuiri, to name but a few, it was a fun filled and very informative day. The whole experience was rounded off very nicely by a wonderful party at the local primary school, Scoil Bhride. With music, dance and song, one of which was composed especially for the day, it was an occasion to remember, and one which the community of Dunleer can certainly look on with pride. No one was more proud of his local area than the Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr. Colm Markey, who said that it was an exceptional display of what a community can achieve when residents, businesses, community groups and schools all come together for the common good. Indeed the Cathoirleach of the Ardee Municipal District Area, Cllr. Liam Reilly, summarised it all very aptly when he said that an occasion such as this makes everyone truly realise the extent of community spirit in the town of Dunleer and it is a day to make everyone extremely proud. Deputy Fergus O’ Dowd, complimented the whole community on their outstanding initiatives, in particular the ‘Better Energy Community’ and ‘Energy Ambassadors’ education programme.

It is wonderful to get the opportunity to showcase all that Co Louth has to offer and hopefully their efforts will be suitably rewarded at the awards ceremony in the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny on Saturday 2nd December 2017.
