Lá Chéilliúradh Chultúr Lú; Bígí linn!
Mellifont Abbey is the place to be on Easter Monday when everyone is welcome to Louth’s first ever Cruinniú na Cásca, a free family day-out, combining music, storytelling, visual arts, craft and heritage, and a few surprises! The event will showcase some of the best of Louth’s cultural gems in the beautiful setting of Mellifont Abbey, the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. The ruins of the near-900 year-old Abbey are situated on the banks of the River Mattock, 10kms north-west of Drogheda. Atmospheric in their own right, the ruins will play host to, among others, SJ McArdle & Barry Kieran from Louth traditional music band, Kern, singer/songwriter David Keenan, and near-legendary fiddler, Gerry O’Connor. Renowned archaeologist, Geraldine Stout, will be on hand to explain the Abbey itself; actress and writer, Grainne Rafferty will entertain all ages with her unique style of storytelling, and local craftspeople will be making and selling their Louth-inspired wares.
There will also be Traditional Games, 15th Century style; Draw on LOUTH – facilitated by local artists where children will get an opportunity to put their mark on LOUTH! Creative Spark will be there with their pop-up print shop, allowing you to create your own unique tote bag to remember the day - all of this and more against the beautiful backdrop of Mellifont Abbey.
Cruinniú na Cásca aims to celebrate culture and creativity in contemporary Irish society and is part of the Creative Ireland Programme, an ambitious five-year initiative, from 2017 to 2022, which places culture and creative communities at the centre of public policy.
Cruinniú na Cásca - Louth is produced by Droichead Arts Centre on behalf of Louth County Council and the Creative Louth Culture Team. The co-operation of the OPW is much appreciated
The Easter Monday fun starts at 1pm and will continue until 5pm. Please note parking is limited.
