Waste Facility Permit Regulations

The Waste Management Act 1996 requires that, with a few exceptions, any person carrying out the recovery or disposal of waste shall hold a waste license, a waste facility permit or a certificate of registration, depending on the nature and extent of the activity. Waste licenses are issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) while waste facility permits and certificates of registration are granted by the Local Authority for privately owned waste facilities.

Since June 2008 waste facility permits and certificates of registration are governed by the Waste Management (Facility Permit and Registration) Regulations 2007, as amended.

Examples of activities which require a waste facility permit or a certificate of registration include land reclamation/development, car dismantling, composting centres, recycling of construction & demolition waste and the reception and storage of waste.
