The expiry date for current North East Region Waste Management Plan 2005-2010 has been extended to 31st December 2012. This plan is currently being evaluated and revised and a new North East Region Waste Management Plan will be implemented before 31st December 2012.
The North East Region Waste Management Plan sets out proposals to manage our waste over a 15 year period from 2001. It sets out an analysis of the current waste management situation in the North East Region, as well as the measures to be taken to improve environmentally sound, re-use, recycling recovery and disposal of waste.
We plan to reduce the amount of waste we produce in the Region, recycle and re-use as much waste as possible, reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and distribute waste to energy facilities in preference to landfills for waste disposal.
Specific targets are sent in the Plan to be achieved at different times over the life span of the plan. Louth County Council operates one landfill site at Whiteriver, Collon, Co. Louth. It is anticipated that his landfill site will close upon completion of Phase 5 in 2013. A new Waste to Energy (Incinerator) Waste Disposal Facility at Duleek, Co. Meath commenced operations in October 2011.
