Under the regulations, a farmer means any person who derives their livelihood from the pursuit of agriculture.
Obligations on Farmers
Under the regulations, a farmer may store waste tyres for the purpose of anchoring silage covering, subject to a maximum of 8 tyres per square metre of any silage pit’s floor area.
All farmers are obliged to ensure that waste tyres are stored in an environmentally sound manner, including any manner which would not endanger human health or harm the environment, and in particular would not —
- create a risk to waters, the atmosphere, land, soil, plants or animals,
- adversely affect the visual impact on the landscape,
- pose a fire risk by virtue of the manner in which the waste tyres are being stored or, as appropriate,
- be mixed with other waste streams when stored.
Farmers can only transfer waste tyres to an authorised and registered waste collector, or recovery operator, or to a Local Authority providing a collection or management service.
Registration Options
Registration is required with the Local Authority, TRACS or TWM once the first movement of waste tyres on or off the farm takes place. The contact details for each of these are as follows:
