What we do?

Staff at Louth County Archives Service carry out the following tasks to ensure the long-term preservation and accessibility of archives:What we do image 1
  • Identify those records which should be kept permanently as archives and those that do not warrant permanent archival preservation;
  • Records kept as archives will have their integrity safeguarded in order to protect the reliability of the information they contain. Any unauthorised alteration to any document once it is placed in the custody of the Archives Service is prevented.
  • Once identified, catalogue and arrange archives in a manner that is compatible with the provenance of the collection, and make them accessible for research;
  • The security of archival collections requires the provision of descriptive lists, the comprehensive numbering and sub-numbering of documents, the supervision of researchers using documents and the provision of security microfilm.
  • Where sensitive or confidential information exists in deposited collections, these will be identified by the archivist when processing the collection and appropriate measures will be taken such as statements of closure or restrictions in descriptive lists, and warning labels on boxes.
  • Assess conservation needs of the collection and carry out basic conservation work;
  • Pack and store archives in secure, environmentally controlled conditions;
  • Manage current and non-current records for the purposes of organisational convenience and efficiency.
